About the “Freedom Ride-CORE” Button Print:
My mother was a Freedom Rider. Freedom Riders were mostly students and young civil rights activists who rode buses across the South in 1961 to challenge segregation. The Supreme Court had already ruled the segregation illegal but the South ignored the rulings—as did the federal government itself. The Freedom Riders were the victims of countless brutal acts of violence, including the burning of a bus they were on. They were also subject to numerous arrests. This is my rendition of the button, from her collection, that she wore as a Freedom Rider.
CORE, or the Congress of Racial Equality, was the organizer of the Freedom Rides. Beyond just the important role CORE played in The Movement, it played an important role for me personally, as my parents actually met at a CORE meeting!
To add another layer of meaning to the project, my parents later had a button store called The Button Tree on South Street in Philadelphia before I was born. So this is a small tribute to, and continuation of, that energy.
So, as you can see, this is a multi-layered homage to my parents. I intend for this to be part of an ongoing series of “buttons” that are small pieces of artwork that serve as tributes to my ancestors, The Button Tree, and simultaneously as icons or remembrances other important past and future touchpoints.
Note that this is actually this is actually the second in my series of “buttons” as it is the follow-on to the Re-Elect Shirley Chisholm ’76 Button that I did for 10x10 last year.
